CHAPTER 18

MURAT WAITED FOUR DAYS FOR SOME NEWS from Nevzat, and when no word came, he was unable to sit still any longer and went to Goztepe. He found Nevzat sitting under the trees, calmly reading a book.

“Hello there, Murat,” Nevzat greeted him. “I was wondering when you were going to show up. What took you so long?”

The greeting irritated Murat. He thought it was ungracious, but he could never be sure if Nevzat was deliberately goading him. “I’m sorry if I’m disturbing you, but I was worried about how things turned out here. Since you haven’t contacted me, I guess you didn’t need my help anymore.” That sounded like a petty child, he thought, immediately regretful.

Nevzat stood up and put his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “Murat, I was just teasing you. I’m always glad to see you, and we, my whole family and I, owe you tons of gratitude.”

“Let’s forget about who owes who what, Nevzat. Just tell me what happened.”

“Well, we had a nice wedding yesterday. A very small one. Only family.”

“Wedding? Ferit came back?”

“No, Ferit didn’t come back.”

“Then who married who, for goodness sake?”

“Selma married Mehmet.”

“Who’s Mehmet?”

“My father’s former orderly.”

Murat sat down. He couldn’t think of a single thing to say. Nevzat told him what happened and the more Murat heard, the more he was certain who the mastermind behind it all was.

“It’s your aunt who orchestrated all this, isn’t it?” It was more of a statement than a question.

“Yes, it was. How did you know?”

“I don’t mean this as a putdown, Nevzat, but I think she’s the brains in your family.”

“You may be right. It was quite a surprise. Especially to my father. It bothered him that he couldn’t find a single thing to object to. It was a brilliant coup. Anyway, Selma has left for Bursa with her husband. God help him!”

“Well, I’m relieved to hear that it all turned out well. How is the rest of your family?”

“You mean how’s Perihan?”

“Well, yes. Weren’t we supposed to go over her conversation with McKay and Wilson?”

“Yes, we were. In all the excitement of the last few days, I didn’t have a chance to talk to her. I’ll tell someone to fetch her.” He stood up and entered the house. Murat sat there waiting, his heart beginning to beat faster and faster. Something had happened the last time he had seen Perihan. He wanted to make sure that she had felt it too.

Nevzat returned, followed by a maid, bringing them Turkish coffee.

“Let me tell you what I found out so far,” Murat started. “Kaan and his men knew that McKay went rowing on the Bosphorus every morning. They thought he was one of those crazy Englishmen who liked sports in all sorts of weather. They never followed him. He always went downstream, following the currents. Well, you know what’s downstream from Arnavutkoy? The coal storage building in Ortakoy! After an hour or so, he would row back to his house, dress up, and go to the British headquarters in old Istanbul.
